The Winnipeg Foundation engages and empowers young people through philanthropic programs that support our community.
The Foundation’s Youth in Philanthropy (YiP) program, in its eighth year, provides 300 high school students first-hand grantmaking experience. In 22 schools, students will form an advisory committee, research and visit local charitable organizations and collectively make grant recommendations.
Earlier this year, the Foundation also participated in the Youth-Led Community Action Projects (Y-CAP), a pilot program initiated by Canadian Heritage. This complementary program engaged youth as grantmakers to support youth-led and youth-serving projects. The Foundation’s Youth Advisory Council, made up of current and former YiP members, was one of 13 groups from participating community foundations across Canada.
The “You”th Can Dance group is one of the Winnipeg-based projects that received support from Y-CAP. The group was formed in May 2006 with five members, all in their early to mid-20s, providing free dance lessons to youth between the ages of 11 and 25.
The “You”th Can Dance group recently participated in the YiP annual conference, held earlier this week, and are also featured in the Foundation’s Fall 2006 magazine,
Working Together. For more information about the Foundation’s youth programs, visit the
