Matthew Langan of Glenboro is currently studying Geographical Information System Technology at Brandon University, thanks to support from the Glenboro Community Education Fund. The first recipient of the scholarship, Langan is building on the GIS certificate he earned at Assiniboine Community College.
The Glenboro Community Education Fund is one of 71 scholarships and bursaries created by 23 Manitoba community foundations through an incentive offered by the Province. The matching program, administered by The Winnipeg Foundation, has seen the Province invest $500,000 in scholarship funds over the past five years.
The incentive has inspired the creation of eight scholarship funds at Glenboro Area Foundation since 2005. Donors have used the opportunity to create permanent endowments that honour loved ones, recognize the pioneer spirit of grandparents, and pay tribute to a local teacher. The funds will provide a permanent source of support for area students pursuing post-secondary education in health care, agriculture, teaching and other fields.
While Glenboro donors have given more than $160,000 to these scholarships, the Province has contributed more than $60,000, boosting assistance to students like Matthew in mapping their futures and realizing their dreams.
