The Winnipeg Foundation recently approved its first round of EnviroGrants. The new pilot program provides support, of up to $5,000, to projects that help local charitable organizations take tangible steps toward more sustainable operations. Proposals must address water conservation, energy conservation, waste reduction and diversion, or greenhouse gas reduction.

Thirteen projects received grants totaling $50,000 in the recent funding round. Some highlights include:

Esther House: $850 for low-flow toilets.

Kidi-Garden Day Nurseries: $5,000 to upgrade taps, develop a composting program and encourage green commuting by staff.

Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre: $2,500 for an energy audit.

St. Boniface Museum: $5,000 for motion-activated lighting.

The West Central Women’s Resource Centre: $5,000 for high efficiency furnaces.
