Students at Victor Mager School take part in a variety of environmental programs.

From growing veggies to composting, alternative energy to carbon offsets, students at Victor Mager School in North St. Vital are getting hands-on lessons in environmental sustainability. A grant from The Winnipeg Foundation in 2009 has helped the school expand its green programming and develop a knowledgeable, passionate and inspiring group of young environmentalists.

The Winnipeg Foundation featured this grant in its 2009 Annual Report, Strengthening Neighbourhoods. The report, which was launched at the school in January, focuses on the Foundation’s work in several Winnipeg neighbourhoods in 2009. In addition to the grant to Victor Mager School, the Foundation also supported the nearby St. Vital Day Care Co-op’s play space revitalization and Sierra Leone Refugee Resettlement’s Summer Learning Program, which operated in partnership with the local Winnipeg Boys and Girls Clubs location. Across the street from Victor Mager School, students at Dakota Collegiate are learning about community needs and grantmaking through the Foundation’s Youth in Philanthropy program.
