Participants in the Abilities Garden
Gardens naturally stimulate the senses and connect people with their environment. The Abilities Garden is helping Winnipeggers enjoy the benefits of gardening regardless of their level of ability.
Located on the north side of the Assiniboine Park Conservatory – the Abilities Garden is fully wheelchair accessible and includes four square, raised planting areas. Participants from around the city with physical or cognitive disabilities, emotional or social challenges take part in the garden’s programs.
Horticultural therapists are able to promote physical activity, which relieves stress and boosts the immune system, along with other health benefits that come from working outdoors. Through the programs, participants’ self-esteem and independence are enhanced and there is relaxing opportunity to socialize.
Plants for the garden are donated by the Conservatory and local nurseries and cared for by participants throughout the growing season.
In 2007, The Winnipeg Foundation supported The Friends of Assiniboine Park Conservatory’s Abilities Garden. The project provides social, emotional and physical benefits to those taking part and also a beautiful space for all Winnipeggers to enjoy.
