The Winnipeg Foundation administers permanently endowed Scholarship funds that provide various types of educational awards. Awards are given through high schools, universities, colleges, community organizations and professional groups.
Scholarships – awards based on academic achievement or merit
Bursaries – awards based on financial need
Prizes – awards generally based on a specific accomplishment, such as highest standing in a single course or winner of a competition
Fellowships – awards provided at the graduate level in support of advanced studies and research, generally based on academic achievement
The Foundation works with donors to establish Scholarship funds by connecting you with schools and educational programs, advising you of existing awards and identifying where greater funding is needed. We can help you determine how students will be chosen for the award to match your interests with the needs of students and schools.
On an administrative level, the Foundation is responsible for:
- advising the school or selection committee of the available award amount;
- ensuring that students are selected according to set criteria and in an objective, non-discriminatory way; and,
- arranging payment of awards.
The Winnipeg Foundation does not review applications nor decide who receives any of the awards we administer.
School-based Awards:
Recipients are chosen primarily by existing selection committees at the schools. Using selection committees already in place ensures that any student who meets the award criteria is considered and prevents students from having to complete multiple applications.
Awards outside the formal school system:
A selection committee may be formed when a new award is created outside of the school system, such as awards created by a professional association or an award given by a community-based sports team. Often the governing committee of the organization acts as the selection committee. In the case of music awards, the recipient is often the winner of a competition.
Donor Participation in Selection
Donors and their immediate family may participate in selecting award recipients provided they do not constitute more than 50% of the selection committee. Donors should consider whether or not any family members would be eligible for the award because participation in the selection process may render them ineligible.
