The Winnipeg Foundation makes grants to local registered charities in the areas of community services, education, health, arts and culture, heritage, recreation and the environment. In 2008, The Winnipeg Foundation distributed a total of $19.2 million in grants, which fall into three categories:
Responsive. Approximately half of the Foundation's grantmaking dollars are awarded in response to requests from community organizations, through applications to our
Community Grants and
Literacy for Life programs.
Donor-Initiated. Grants are made at the recommendation of donors through designated and donor advised funds. The Foundation assists donors in funding projects and organizations that best match the donor's philanthropic goals. Organizations cannot apply for donor-initiated grants.
Proactive. A portion of our grantmaking dollars is awarded proactively in priority areas identified by the Foundation's Board of Directors.
The Winnipeg Foundation provides additional services for registered charities by assisting with the establishment of
Agency Endowment Funds.
