Foundation supports campaigns with more than $1.3 million
The Winnipeg Foundation has supported five local capital campaigns for a total of $1,375,000. The grants, which include two $500,000 commitments – to the Health Sciences Centre and the University of Winnipeg – were approved by the Foundation's Board of Directors in late January.

"This is an exciting group of grants in support of major initiatives that will strengthen our community in a variety of ways," says Richard Frost, Chief Executive Officer of The Winnipeg Foundation. "These projects will certainly have a positive impact on Winnipeg and we are pleased to lend our support."

The five grants include:

Health Sciences Centre>, $500,000
Toward its Breakthrough! Campaign to develop the Siemens Institute for Advancement Medicine, a world class research, treatment and clinical care facility.

Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre, $150,000
For development of a North End Wellness Centre, in partnership with several community organizations.

East Winnipeg Sports Association, $100,000
To develop Buhler Recreation Park, a multi-use recreational facility in the Transcona area.

University of Winnipeg, $500,000
To support an Innovative Learning Centre to provide educational opportunities to inner city residents.

Le Cercle Moliere, $125,000
To construct a new theatre as part of a major expansion and renovation of the Centre culturel franco-manitobain.

In fiscal 2005, The Winnipeg Foundation granted $16.2 million to more than 600 local charitable organizations. Grants cover a wide range of activities: community service, education, health, environment, arts, recreation and heritage. Grant amounts vary widely, but average approximately $15,000.

The Winnipeg Foundation requires that grant requests of $100,000 or more be submitted for the September 30th granting deadline. The Foundation has three grant cycles per year.
