The Winnipeg Foundation to accept U.S. donations
The Winnipeg Foundation is now able to provide a charitable tax receipt to donors in the U.S. With the establishment of The Winnipeg Foundation USA, the organization expands its services to donors south of the border as well as to other Manitoba community foundations.
"Our work will always be local, but establishing a U.S. corporation recognizes that there are donors from beyond our borders who wish to support Manitoba charities," says Richard Frost, Chief Executive Officer of The Winnipeg Foundation. "Some are former Winnipeggers who want to support their hometown. Others have loved ones in the city whom they want to honour. This move gives even more incentive for Americans to make gifts to our Foundation or to agencies that have endowments with us."
Through the American corporation, The Winnipeg Foundation will also be able to accept U.S. gifts on behalf of other Manitoba community foundations, with which it works closely.
All gifts made to The Winnipeg Foundation are pooled and permanently invested. The interest earned on these endowment funds is distributed to a wide variety of charitable projects that help strengthen our city. In 2007, the Foundation distributed $17.8 million in grants to 680 local charities in the areas of: community service, education, health, environment, heritage, arts and culture and recreation.
The Winnipeg Foundation, your centre for community philanthropy, was established in 1921 and is Canada's first community foundation.
