Law, Philanthropy and New Economic Challenges:
Changing the Rules of Engagement
On Sept. 16th, The Winnipeg Foundation and the faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba held its inaugural Philanthropy and Law symposium in Winnipeg. National keynote speakers at the half-day event included Tim Brodhead,
President & CEO, The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation, Terry De March,
Director General of the Charities Directorate at Canada Revenue Agency and Ed Waitzer,
Partner, Stikeman Elliot.
Two concurrent sessions – one chaired by Winnipeg Foundation CEO Rick Frost, examined charity management and fiduciary responsibility, and the other hosted by Jan Lederman, partner at Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP, highlighted funding challenges facing charities and non-profits. Each panel featured national and local experts.
Community foundation representatives from across the country (Vancouver Foundation, Edmonton Community Foundation, London Community Foundation, Victoria Foundation) joined delegates from charitable organizations, lawyers, accountants, law students, not-for-profit board members and others, at the sold-out symposium.
