Professional Development Grants

Professional Development Grants help organizations access training and mentorship opportunities.

Note: Some of the opportunities formerly under Professional Development Grants have now moved to our Organizational Development Grants program.


  • Professional Development Grants are for permanent staff or board members of registered charities that primarily benefit the citizens of Winnipeg.
  • Your organization must have a registered charitable number from Canada Revenue Agency to apply for a Professional Development Grant. (This number is required to access the online application form.)
  • You may apply for one Professional Development Grant per calendar year. Organizations may apply for a Community Grant, or any special program grant, in the same year, but applications must be for different projects.


Professional Development Grants help charitable organizations access individual and group learning opportunities that build staffing and leadership capacity.

Application Due Date

Note: If an application date falls on a weekend or holiday, applications will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. the next business day.

Applications are accepted through our online application process on a continuous basis and will be reviewed per the following timelines.

Conferences and Short course/Workshops

Applications are due well in advance of the professional development opportunity; notification of decision is generally within three to four weeks of application.

Advanced Management Training and Management Mentorships

Applications are due by the 15th of each month; notification of decision is generally within four weeks.

Note: consultation with the Director of Community Grants is required for Advanced Management Training and Management Mentorship grants.

Types of Professional Development Grants

Conferences, and short course/workshop

  • Eligible costs are registration fees, and travel and accommodation (if required).
  • Up to $1,500.

Advanced management training

  • This includes tuition fees for courses related to enhancing management skills in the not-for-profit sector offered at an accredited learning institute; i.e., college, university, continuing education, etc.
  • Consideration will also be given to learning opportunities on leadership in the not-for-profit sector that are culturally appropriate and community-based.
  • Up to $5,000.

Management mentorships

  • One-on-one support from a consultant or peer mentor for executive directors or senior managers; time limited basis.
  • Up to $5,000.

Safety training for frontline workers

  • To equip frontline workers at community agencies to deal with clients experiencing mental health and substance abuse issues.
  • Up to $5,000.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Trainings

  • Trainings relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion such as unconscious bias, anti-racism training, anti-oppression training, and human rights relating to sexual orientation and gender.
  • Eligible costs are course and facilitator fees.
  • Up to $5,000.
