The fabric of our city is woven by caring, compassionate people — each one with a story to tell. The BeCause & Effect podcast, an initiative of The Winnipeg Foundation, shares those stories.
“I’ve met and interviewed tons of fascinating Winnipeggers,” says Nolan Bicknell, host of BeCause & Effect. “While a 10-minute radio interview can be compelling, I always want to keep the exchange going; to get to the core of what makes Winnipeggers so generous with their time and resources and what inspires them to do so.”
Guests on BeCause & Effect share their personal stories about what drives them to the Causes they care about. Season 2 launches today, Tuesday, Sept. 10, with a conversation between Bicknell and Olympic gold medalist curler, Jennifer Jones. Jones, a repeat world curling champion, spends a lot of her off-ice time supporting her community in a multitude of ways. She sat down for a conversation with BeCause & Effect last week at the Granite Curling Club.
“Because of my family and community, and the strength they give me, I am never scared to fail,” Jones says. “All the great things and the great moments that our team has experienced, would not have happened without volunteers. We got to have the Olympic trials at the MTS Centre in front of all of Winnipeg because Winnipeggers stepped up and volunteered. That never ever goes unnoticed, and the fact that those people were the reason that our dreams came true, it’s something. ‘Thank you’ just never seems good enough.”
Additional Season 2 guests include Dayna Spiring, CEO of Economic Development Winnipeg; long-time Hockey Night in Canada announcer Ron McLean; and Prairie Climate Centre Co-Director Dr. Ian Mauro. The full roster of Season 2 guests will be promoted each week as the episodes are released.
In Season 1, Bicknell sat down for conversations with Winnipeggers Mark Chipman from True North Sports and Entertainment, Sister Lesley Sacouman from Holy Names House of Peace, and sportscaster Scott Oake about the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre, to highlight just a few of the premiere Season’s guests.
“The podcast’s conversations have been inspiring. All the guests remind me, and our listeners, why we should be proud to live in this city,” Bicknell says.
