BeCause & Effect #109: Carolyn Gray

This week’s guest on BeCause & Effect is Carolyn Gray, an artist and filmmaker from Winnipeg, who is one of five filmmakers selected for the first ever Cinematoba Film Fest, a partnership between The Winnipeg Foundation and The National Screen Institute.

Carolyn’s film is called Escape! The film is based on a true story about legendary Manitoban escape artist and magician Dean Gunnerson.

In this episode Carolyn talks about the origins of Escape!, exploring the unique bond between an unlikely duo: Dean, a cancer survivor and magician, and Phil, a child struggling with his own illness. Together, their bond creates real magic.

We also discuss Carolyn’s process, her origins, why she chose to make this short film, and how Dean’s story profoundly affected her artistic career.

Cinematoba, a partnership between The Winnipeg Foundation and the National Screen Institute, is an initiative focused on supporting local filmmakers as they share stories of local generosity from across Manitoba. The goal of the program is for all Manitobans to discover what generosity looks like in our province and was originally planned as part of The Foundation’s 2021 centennial celebrations but was delayed to 2022-2023 due to COVID.
