More than $4 million allocated to local charities through The Winnipeg Foundation’s Major Capital Grants Program

For Immediate Release – Impact in community grows as The Winnipeg Foundation announces $4.2 million of capital support for 14 local charities.

Economic and inflationary pressures continue to squeeze local charities and community organizations, making already expensive and complex infrastructure repair and capital projects more challenging than ever. This year’s program supports organizations dedicated to enhancing our community through access to childcare, food and housing security, arts and culture projects, and building an overall sense of belonging.

The Major Capital Grants announced today range in size from $150,000 to $500,000. To view the complete list of grant recipients and their funded projects see the attached backgrounder.

“We’re seeing urgent needs in the childcare and healthcare sectors; bolstering these programs ensures our communities can thrive now and for future generations,” says Sky Bridges, CEO, The Winnipeg Foundation. “The Major Capital Grants announced today will revitalize crumbling infrastructure, expand into new spaces, and strengthen vital services.”

Community Highlights

For more than 20 years, Huron Child Care Inc. has been a bastion in the Early Childhood Learning sector with a dedicated and educated workforce. It currently serves Winnipeg’s North End community by providing care to 91 children aged 12 weeks to 12 years. With support from the Major Capital Grants program, Huron will transform a space on Mountain Avenue into Mountain Child Care. The organization’s second location will be an early childhood learning centre with space for 24 infants and 96 preschool children from the Point Douglas, Weston, Garden City, Amber Trails, and Inkster communities and will help alleviate years-long waitlists.

Raising the Roof is a national charity focused on providing education about the root causes of homelessness and working to solve the crisis through collaboration. Originally founded in Toronto, it has raised more than $8 million for 200+ homelessness prevention programs with the Toque Campaign and renovated vacant spaces into energy-efficient affordable housing through the Reside program. Raising the Roof’s capital grant will help transform a space on Young Street into a 24-unit residential building with supportive wraparound services and the opportunity for residents to take free hands-on training to develop skills suited for the trades industry. Additionally, 15 two-bedroom family units are slated for the project. Supportive housing provides access to services that can help individuals and families struggling with poverty, addictions, and/or mental health find stability, growth, and fulfillment.

The Women’s Health Clinic (WHC) has served downtown Winnipeg for 40 years. This feminist community health clinic provides counselling, wellness education, parenting workshops, eating disorder prevention and recovery, abortion services, health education, and birth and midwifery services to 35,000 people every year. Though the clinic has grown and evolved over the years, it has never taken on a full-scale renovation at its Graham Avenue location. Critical infrastructure needs attention, and their engineer’s report says time is running out. With help from their Major Capital Grant, WHC plans to fully renovate the clinic to exceed accessibility standards, expand programming, introduce energy efficient systems, and ensure all patrons of the WHC community have a safe, comfortable, and reliable experience.

The Foundation’s Major Capital Grants Program supports large capital projects and considers applications once per year. To be notified about the next intake for the program please subscribe to our Grants News e-wire.
