A message from the CEO: Coming Together for our community

As the seasons change, many of us find ourselves settling into new routines and rhythms. For me, reflection often happens on my evening walks with my dog, Henri, taking in the cool air and the smell of autumn. It’s a simple reminder to pause, take stock of where we’ve been, and re-energize for what’s still to come.

In this issue of Working Together, we’re highlighting the many ways The Winnipeg Foundation supports our community through our ongoing commitment to granting across all aspects of community—Arts, Culture and Heritage; Community Services; Environment; Health, Wellness and Recreation; and Literacy, Education and Employment. This edition shines a special light on the Environment, reflecting a growing call for action through more climate-related and community-led initiatives.

Our cover story features the International Institute for Sustainable Development’s Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA)—the only freshwater research site of its kind in the world, where scientists study how our actions affect the health of our lakes. We also highlight âniskômohcikan, which brings environmental learning to children in underserved neighbourhoods, and Youth Climate Lab, a youth-led group addressing climate anxiety and empowering Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) youth to lead change. Together, these stories remind us that caring for our planet is deeply connected to caring for one another.

This summer, Manitoba faced its worst wildfire season in history, displacing thousands and devastating communities. In response, The Foundation launched the 2025 Manitoba Wildfire Response Fund to support both immediate relief and long-term recovery (see page 15 for an update). Our commitment to help communities heal, rebuild, and prepare for the future remains strong.

We also welcomed Lisa Thomson Stifora, Vice President of Community Generosity, and David Hawthorne, Vice President of Communications and Marketing, to our Strategic Management Team. Each brings more than 20 years of experience and a deep passion for our city’s charitable sector. I’m excited about the insight and leadership they bring to The Foundation.

Finally, I want to express heartfelt thanks to George Bass, whose term as Board Chair concludes at year-end. Since joining the Board in 2017, George has served with integrity and generosity, contributing to nearly every
committee and guiding the Board with wisdom and care. His leadership has made a lasting impact, and we are deeply grateful.

Thank you for continuing to walk alongside us. The stories in these pages remind us that when we come together with generosity, compassion, and purpose, we truly can strengthen our community for all.
